Custom Laminated Glass Solutions
Invented in 1903 by French chemist Édouard Bénédictus, laminated glass started as a simple laboratory accident and ended up as a crucial part of the automotive industry we know today. After hearing about an accident in which two women were severely injured by glass debris, Bénédictus filed a patent to officially produce laminated glass windshields that reduced injuries that were the result of automobile accidents.
Made by “sandwiching” a polyvinyl butyral (PVB), transparent interlayer between two glass panes during the manufacturing process, laminated glass is strong, cost-effective and shatter-proof. Laminated glass is used in multiple industries to keep vehicle occupants safe and out of harm’s way from glass debris, including in public transportation, construction, the hospitality and retail industries, automobiles, recreational vehicles and more! Custom Glass Solutions offers many custom laminated glass products for OEMs and other customers.

FEATURES & BENEFITS OF LAMINATED GLASS
It’s no surprise that laminated glass is mandatory for automotive windshields in every industrialized country. Damage to door glass and windshields can occur during accidents or due to flying or falling debris, and vehicle operators need to be protected when the unexpected happens. Laminated glass helps make vehicles safer in all scenarios.
Custom laminated glass designs from Custom Glass Solutions offer protection to help keep vehicle operators and passengers safe.
The advantages of laminated glass windshields and laminated window glass include:
Strength
The interlayer in a laminated glass windshield softens the blow of an impact, absorbing the energy of the collision and preventing the occupant from being ejected from the vehicle.
Safety
If a laminated glass panel is damaged, the glass cracks in a “spider-web” pattern but remains intact rather than shattering, significantly minimizing the risk of cut or injury from shards of glass.
UV Protection
A laminated glass windshield blocks more than 99 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, which prevents cancer-causing UV rays from penetrating exposed skin, protects eyesight, and even stops the fading of interior materials in vehicles.
Versatility & Repair
Laminated glass from Custom Glass Solutions offers endless design possibilities and helps save money on re-installations.
Sound Attenuation / Reduction
In order to increase operator comfort and productivity, custom laminated glass reduces unwanted noise and sound from outside of the vehicle.
Proper Airbag Deployment
Laminated glass is strong enough to withstand the astonishing speed and power of safety air bag deployment – around 2,000 lbs. of pressure in 1/30th of a second.
Security
The durable interlayer in laminated glass affords up to two minutes of intrusion resistance from thieves and vandals.
Laminated Glass Use by Industry
Custom Glass Solutions offers laminated glass for many applications, including laminated windshields and windows, glass barriers, and in construction equipment. Industries served with custom laminated glass from Custom Glass Solutions include:

ACOUSTIC GLASS
When it comes to glass, there’s a lot more than meets the eye—or ear. Acoustic glass is custom laminated glass that reduces NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) impact. Acoustic glass is made by laminating two pieces of glass together with a sound-blocking PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) interlayer. The PVB absorbs high-frequency sound waves so they are not transmitted through the glass into the vehicle cab. Whether it’s for an RV or auto, heavy truck, or construction & agricultural equipment, acoustic glass offers significant benefits.
Reduces Noise – It makes sense that the most important benefit of acoustic glass has to do with noise. Using acoustic glass for windshields or windows can block ambient noise from getting inside the vehicle or machine. If you want a quieter ride, then you’ll reap the benefits of acoustic glass.
Protects Driver Hearing – Speaking of a quieter ride…acoustic glass can protect against driver hearing loss. Noises such as horns, sirens, or just the vibration of tires moving, can reach 75 dB (decibels), which can do significant damage to driver hearing (ideal interior noise level should be around 25 dB). Since the windshield has the largest surface area and is directly in front of the driver, it’s the most beneficial glass to utilize custom acoustic safety glass. Protecting driver hearing is critical for long and short-haul truckers, vocational equipment operators, and others who drive a significant amount. Acoustic laminated windshields help in this battle.
Better Operator Communication – Whether you’re driving a bus and need to hear instructions from dispatch or communicating via CB radio in your heavy truck, acoustic glass provides a better solution for an effective communication environment. If communication is important while operating your vehicle or equipment, you should consider acoustic glass.
More Comfortable Ride – Even if communication isn’t vital while operating your equipment, acoustic glass adds creature comfort and allows for a more comfortable ride. Music can be played at softer volumes. There is less distraction from ambient noise. Drivers can thus better-focus on the road or the job being performed. This can be especially relevant for RV windshields, since the main joy of an RV comes from the journeys you take in it, not the noise you hear while driving it.
Boosts Productivity – With a quieter cab environment comes a boost in overall productivity. A more comfortable ride with fewer distractions means work calls go smoother and deals can get done. In agricultural or construction vehicles and machines, fewer distractions and less noise can mean more operator focus, quicker reactions and more productivity to get the job done faster.
If you’ve been considering custom safety glass in the form of an acoustic glass windshield for your vehicle or machine, then calling Custom Glass Solutions is the next step. HUD GLASS – HEADS UP DISPLAY FUNCTIONALITY
While you’re looking through your laminated glass windshield, you can also receive driving and environmental information on your windshield through the use of innovative HUD (heads up display) glass technology. The information is presented directly on the windshield in a transparent manner that does not interrupt your view of the road, yet provides guidance and warnings for increased safety and a better navigation experience.
Heads-up technology has been around since the mid-’80s but is coming into its own in the 21ST century. By adding features from the vehicle dashboard and the infotainment system to the car’s windshield, information and operations can be viewed without looking down and taking one’s attention away from the road. Features such as advanced integration of the GPS via HUD glass enable the driver to keep their gaze on the front windshield, while seeing indicators for the next turn, upcoming highway exit configurations, or even hazard alerts that can prevent the driver from turning into the path of oncoming traffic.
Another big push for HUD glass is automatic braking warnings when the car senses it’s about to hit something. The warning flashes on the windshield—not the dashboard—so the driver doesn’t take their eyes off the road but still sees the warning. Please reach out to CGS for more information on our innovative HUD glass for vehicular navigation and more.
